God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, we thank You for the gospel of Your Son. You have prepared His way through the prophets of old and the ministry of John the Baptist. We are not worthy to be the lowest servants of Your beloved Son, with whom You are well pleased. We thank You for Your Kingdom, and for Your power in calling Your disciples into Your church. Today we leave our worries and fears behind and follow You. Teach us from Your Word with all authority and power. Your ways are amazing. You have victory over all foes, seen and unseen. You touch the dying woman, and she rises up to serve You. You heal crowds of sick people and cast out demonic hosts. You have prayed faithfully and preached throughout the world through Your servants. Make us clean today, and cause us to give careful attention to Your holy commandments. Father God, we come to hear Your Son today and to be near Him who has come near to us with His Word and Spirit. Thank You for the forgiveness of sins, and the power to make a man rise and walk. Lord, throw off from us this day the paralysis of hatred and doubt, that we might walk by faith in Your Spirit. Help us to walk away from the love of money and the approval of men as we receive the healing of body and Spirit that comes from our holy Bridegroom. We mourn because of our sin, but we rejoice with the news of the new wine of full salvation through a Substitute. Today we will serve You and rest in Your Son. He is the King. We are His disciples and we will hear His voice this day. Lord God, You see us in our weakness and shame. Do good to us this day for the glory of Your holy name. Though many sought ways to destroy Your Son, and such were some of us, we now bow before You in reverence, believing fervently in Jesus the Messiah. Thank You for Your apostles, and for the Word to which they gave full testimony. We benefit from their testimony to Your Son, though they were weak. You filled them with Your Holy Spirit and enabled them to proclaim a Word that we have now heard. Now the kingdom of darkness is coming to an end. Bind the strong man and cast Him out of Your house. Let us rejoice in You as those who have been granted the honor of being called Your mothers and brothers and sisters, for we hear Your Word and follow You this day. O Sovereign Lord, teach us, that we might listen and live. Turn away the devil who would want us to ignore Your word. We will not fear persecution. We will not be distracted by other engagements. We want to be fruitful disciples. Speak to us and we will live. Use Your servants to show us the truth. Encourage us in the day of tribulation. Keep us from the deceitfulness of riches. Bring a harvest among us of righteousness and peace. Bring to light the greatness and glory of Your Son. Enlarge our hearts in the mercy of the gospel. Make the seed of Your Word sprout and grow among us with astounding results in the day of Your glory. Though today we may be few in number, give us confidence that You are well able to build Your kingdom. You can calm the waves and winds when they threaten us. You will not let us perish. Lord, see the tumult within our souls, and calm our hearts again this day. Lord God, an enemy would take aim at our bodies and souls. An enemy who is stronger than us would attack our children and Your church. Only You can cast him out. We turn to You for Your strong Word. A legion of demons destroys the people of Your possession. God save us! Clothe us in the righteousness of Christ and help us to be in our right minds. We will serve You. Send us out to our friends to tell the truth about the great things that You have done for us. Will our children live? Will our wives have good health? Why should disease and evil seem to win among us? You are the One who can deliver Your church from trouble with a Word. We trust in You. Make us well. Make our families truly live again. We will not fear. We believe. Send away the professional mourners who make their living in celebrating destruction. We want to be up and walking again in Your resurrection power. Father, why should people reject You? Why do they take offense at the Son of Man? Our great Prophet is worthy of all honor. Look at our remaining unbelief and heal us. We go forth day by day to proclaim Your Name and to perform works of justice, beauty, and order. Glorify the name of Your Son through Your church. Though powerful men may turn against the righteous, You can give us strength in the day of trouble. We do not wish to be moved by foolish lusts or our seeking the approval of men. Give us hope, though people would stand against us. Grant strength and mercy to Your persecuted church. We run the race that You have given us today. We want to see You. We need You to feed us. Do miracles of amazing fruitfulness through Your church. May we see heaven’s blessing come down among men that the Name of Jesus would be lifted up. We pray to You, O God. Your Son walked on the sea. There is nothing that is too difficult for You. We will not be afraid. Our hearts are moved in devotion to You. We bring You many who are in great need. If we could touch even the fringe of Your garment on their behalf, we know that they would be made well. Great Lawgiver of Israel, Your people have twisted together their own traditions and Your holy Law, treating the mixture as somehow divine. Forgive us, for we would reject Your commandments and establish our own traditions as the pathway of righteousness. Help us to see our real duty and the corruption of our wicked hearts. From within, out of the hearts of men, come evil thoughts, words, and actions. Through these habits of sin we have been utterly defiled. Cleanse us, O God! Have mercy also on our sons and daughters. Grant us a crumb from Your holy table, and deliver us from the doctrines and moral directives of demons. Grant to us holy speech, and open our mouths in praise to You. You do all things well. Father God, have compassion upon us. We have been with You, and we have followed You, but we are hungry. We need daily bread for our bodies, and are often amply supplied, but who will fill our souls with Your truth? Who will fill us with Your Spirit, if You do not give us this great heavenly gift every day? We know that You will give us bread from heaven. May we have eyes to see what is good. May we have ears to hear, understand, and obey. Help us to see more clearly, even when we imagine that we have a perfect understanding of all things. Heal us again, that we might see the glories of Your Son more and more. He is the Christ, who suffered, died, and rose again. Keep us far from the doctrines of the devil, who would turn us away from the cross. Grant that we would embrace the truth and duty of this atoning sacrifice, for Christ has taken away our sin and called us to a new way of love. Glorious Lord, You will bring us to resurrection life on the day of Your Son’s return. We long for the radiance of that glorious hour, for the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed. We do not see this radiance now, but we see our risen Lord Jesus, the firstborn among many brethren. The Son of Man has suffered many things, as was written of Him in the Scriptures. When He returns, He will not suffer again, but will reign in glory. The healing of that Day will be full and glorious, and the judgment of that Day will be overwhelming. We believe; help our unbelief. Renew our faith in the power and love of Your Son. Make us more knowledgeable of the life to come, that we might speak the truth in comfort to those who are in greatest need. The Son of Man has suffered, died, and risen from the dead. We see with the eyes of faith, and we believe. We will not seek any longer to be the greatest in the view of men, but we will be great by being servants to others. We belong to Christ. Give us His love for the young and helpless. He has had abundant mercy on us when we were in the greatest need. Give us a great expectation concerning the coming of His Kingdom, and may we live at peace with each other. Father God, we thank You for the beauty and holiness of Your teaching. Help us not to rebel against Your Word. From the beginning of creation, You have made us male and female. You have joined us together in marriage, so that the two are one. Help us to obey You. You have blessed Your church with children. May we never hinder them as they come to You. You are good, O God. We should follow Your Law. We flatter ourselves and overestimate our obedience to Your commandments. Thank You for the perfections of Christ. We come to Him today as Your children. Surely all things are possible for You, even our salvation. Our lives are wonderfully in Your hands. We trust Your promises, and would face even persecutions now, that we might be near You. Your Son was delivered to murderers, and He died for us, yet He rose from the dead. Give us the courage to stay with You, The one who would be close to you will surely suffer. Still, it is better to be near You. We give our lives in service, for surely You have served us first and best. Have mercy on us. Grant that we might have a depth of godly vision that comes through faith. Draw us near to You today, and make us whole in Jesus Christ, that we might follow You. Glorious Lord, You came into Jerusalem as a humble and peaceful King. Help us to see You rightly. You are in charge of every detail of life, and have all power and authority, yet You were willing to be low that we might be saved. Is there no fruit in Your church today? May it never be, O Lord. Purify Your temple, and grant us a life of prayer together as those who know that all good things come from You. We ask You for that which we believe to be agreeable to Your will. We trust that we have received these gifts even now, and that all that we rightly request is certainly ours in Your Son, for You have told us to pray with faith. We gladly forgive others, lest our prayers be hindered. Forgive us, O Lord. Your Son came from heaven. We will not ignore His Word. Great Teacher and Shepherd of Our Souls, show us again the truth of Christ. We want to hear Him and obey. We want to respect Him as Your Son. How could we sin against You? Many religious men have sought only to trap Your Son, and even to kill Him. You have given us earthly rulers. Peaceful government is a good gift from You. Yet Your enemies would want to use this good power against the King of kings. Father, we believe in the resurrection. There we shall see Your Son. We long for that day, O Lord, when even angels and redeemed saints will usher us into Your presence. Lord, grant us grace that we will love You now the way that we will surely love You then, You are One, and when we are near Your Son, we are not far from Your Kingdom. Grant Your servants power in teaching Your Word to Your people. Open up to us the mysteries of the faith that have now been revealed in Your Word. May we also see the way of generous and happy living, in service to You and to others. Out of our poverty, we give to You all that we have. We trust You with our lives. Eternal Father, we thank You that You have made us to be the temple of Your Holy Spirit. We long for the fulfillment of Your glorious decrees. We know that our redemption is drawing nearer every day. We commit our lives to the preaching of Your gospel to all nations through the church. We ask that You would keep us from every great apostasy and rebellion in Your church before the return of Your Son. We will be held together by You through that frightening day, for Your elect will not be led astray to eternal destruction. Your Son will come. We wait for Him as we hear Your Word. We will pay attention to the tasks ahead of us today with the sure hope of eternal life. Lord God, the enemies of Your Son were eager to put Him to death. We thank You that You have made us to love our Savior from the heart. We pour out our lives in devotion to Him. Still, the Judas impulse of betrayal troubles Your church in every age, for the false friends of Your Son are not only outside the church. Betrayers are among the ministers and disciples of our King. Despite this treachery, our Lord gave His body and blood for sinners. Forgive us, Father. We think of ourselves more highly than we ought. Like Peter, we imagine that we have the strength to be faithful through any test. Your Son faced the agony of death as our Substitute. There was no other way. Your will was done in the salvation of sinners. Through the sign of a kiss, many would cause trouble in Your church even today. Others believe in the powers of the world, and would attempt to build Your kingdom with the sword of men, rather than the sword of the Spirit. Many would bring false witness against Your Son and His church. How can Your kingdom survive? Through the power that comes from above, You stand against evil and violence. Though brutal men would beat and mock Your Son, He will win His battle without responding to any of the lies of false witnesses. May we not deny You despite the intimidation of those who seem to have power at their disposal. We mourn our unfaithfulness and again commit ourselves to follow in the way of the cross. Glorious God, how Your Son suffered indignities for our sake! Crowds would choose a Barabbas, rather than have our King released from unjust bondage. The voice of many yelled out the words, “Crucify Him!” How could this be? Men of envy had delivered Him up to the Gentiles. People created in Your image scourged Him and led Him away. They mocked Him and spit on Him. May we be rightly moved at these horrific events. We would follow this true King of the Jews, though we too may face the attacks of brutal men. Many reviled our King and taunted Him, urging Him to abandon the cross and save Himself. Yet our strong Lord was faithful, even facing the divine abandonment that we deserved. Finally, our King breathed His last. Through the powerful death of this one Son of God, a way of access into Your holy presence has been made for us. Our prayer to You this day, offered as it is in Jesus’ Name, is possible only because of His death. His body was laid in a tomb, but before long the tomb would be empty as a testimony to the power of His indestructible life. Father God, the Lord Jesus Christ, Lord of the Sabbath, is risen! The stone was rolled back. The body was gone from the tomb. He was not there. He had risen, as an angel gave perfect testimony. Though His disciples were alarmed and afraid, our hope is not in the courage or wisdom of men, but in Your Son. He has granted to us a new and powerful life of holy Sabbath rest in the incomparable strength of our Redeemer’s resurrection. |
